Boulder Opal is found in the remote outback of western Queensland. This material occurs in thin seams in sedimentary ironstone and sandstone. The colour layer is naturally part of the dense ironstone or sandstone base, creating opals with often incredible intense dark and beautiful colours with an asymmetrical shape giving Boulder Opal a very individual look.
It is normally less expensive than a similar quality in Black Opal, but more expensive than a similar quality Light Opal.
In recent years it has become very popular due to its intense dark colour and patterns, combined with interesting shapes.
Clifton Opal specialises in Boulder Opal and is arguably the largest Boulder Opal supplier in Australia.
